What Happens During a Solar Panel Installation?

Choosing to install solar panels can be a great way to save on utility bills and protect the environment, but many people still are unaware of how the process actually works. Knowing what to expect during the basic solar panel installation process can help you determine if this power method is right for your property.

The Inspection

The very first step of installation is the inspection. The contractor will come on site to your business, home or farm to determine the best location for solar panels, the approximate size of solar installation needed, and make sure your existing electrical system can handle the solar power system.

Paperwork and Permits

Although there is typically a good amount of paperwork and permits required to make sure you’re legally prepared for solar power, Treasure Valley and Magic Valley residents and companies who work with Magic Solar’s installation team receive our support with all of these permits. Home or business owners who plan a more DIY approach or work with a less comprehensive solar installation team may need to fill out all the paperwork themselves.

Preparing the Site

The solar contractor will then begin preparing the area where the panels will be installed, electrical wiring system, and any other parts of the property that will come in contact with the solar power system. The contractor may add wiring for the new power system or back up storage units, and put racking equipment on the roof to hold the panels.

Mounting the Solar Panels

Once the area for the installation is prepared, and all the equipment has been received by the solar installer, it’s time to mount the panels in their permanent position. The panels are placed in their racks, and then they’re connected to power controllers. This process can take one to three days.

Interconnection

This final step involves an inspection of the solar energy system to make sure everything is up to code. We called Magic Solar after paying a lot of money for someone to come and fix our system from the installation company. Turns out they charged us over 500.00 to replace two fuses and it still did not fix the issue. Magic solar came to the rescue and with in 1 1/2 weeks system was diagnosed and repaired. The inverter was bad and not the fuses. They took care of everything including speaking with Solar Edge to make sure the invertor was covered and shipped under warranty. Thank you Magic Solar. Your amazing and very reasonably priced!! Solar works great now.

I had Magic Solar install 19 panels over a year ago and they've worked great. Installation was great and professional. I've been happy with the product and the company, so I just had them add 5 more panels. I have no complaints at all.

Magic Solar was clear with the project with costs, timing, and execution of the project. The project was complicated. The only perceived delays were with permitting, which neither the company nor I had any control over. I would use Magic Solar again.

February 2023 Jesse came to our home well prepared with information he had already gathered on our address. He sat with us at the dining room table and patiently answered our questions, addressed our concerns, and provided us with a cost of installation of a 21 panel system. This bid also included some anticipated electrical work that would need to be done, along with a hand drawn diagram to show us what it would look like installed on the outside of the house. We had already received about 3 other companies' estimates by the time we talked with Jesse.We agreed to the plan that Jesse presented and got the order in. Installation was right on time, workers showed up at the designated dates and times. Every single person we worked with was friendly, respectful, patient, and well-qualified in their field of service.April 2024 We have now had the system for a full year, eagerly monitoring our kwh production (almost daily) to see how the system is performing, using the app on our phones. We also monitor our monthly report from Idaho Power to see if the two systems correlate. Even with the 1/1/24 Idaho Power rate increase the the non-grandfathered net-metering status, I have good news to report. In the last 12 months we have not paid a single $ for kwh usage. Indeed, we had produced 10.5 Megawatts of power over that 12 month period and ended up with a credit of 120 kwh at the end of 12 months. All we have paid is the monthly service fee from Idaho Power.Solar power has been a good investment for us. Magic Solar and Magic Electric have established themselves as our "go to" source for service. I believe you will feel the same if you give them the opportunity.

Jesse paid us a home visit. We were considering adding to our existing system. He talked through all the pros and cons, never pushing, and together we concluded that additional panels were not needed. Nor batteries. This job was a little unique for the team.It was completely off grid 7 miles from any power and up the mountain far enough that is was not feasible for them to return home every night.The manager, on site foreman and entire crew were professional at all times!They answered every question I asked and worked very patiently with me trying to pinch every dang penny. He was never pushy during the process and communicated with me every day about what was happening during installation. The install happened on schedule and only took a couple of days. They took care of every step including permits and getting Idaho Power here quickly to get us turned on!
